Editing Techniques used in Thrillers
Motivated Cut
Motivated cuts are often used in Thrillers to make the audience want to see what happens next. A motivated cut is when a character is looking out of shot with an expression on her face that makes the audience want to see what she is seeing. This is a very good technique to use and an example of this is in the film The Silence of the Lambs when the women is looking at the board and it makes the audience want to see what she is looking at.
Cross-cutting
Cross-cutting is very important in Thrillers because it can show two contrasting views. By this I mean that a lot of films cut between something quick and dramatic and with something slow and calm. An example of this is in the film The Da Vinci Code introduction when the man is being chased and at the same time the main character is giving a presentation. In this example, it shows what crime this man will need to solve

Camera Techniques used in Thriller Films
Close-up
Close-ups are used to show something in more detail than any other shot. It is normally used to look at the expression of a person or to look at an object of importance. It just allows the audience to see what the characters see. Here is an example of a close-up, looking at some groseme hands in the introduction of the film Se7ev. A close-up is used to emphasise the strangeness of the hands.
Camera Compisition
Sometimes in Thrillers the camera composition can be used to great effect. This is because the compisition of a shot can often tell you a lot about whats happening and who the characters are. An example of this is in the film The Usual Suspects when the police are interviewing a witness. When you first see the shot it is clear that that is what it is because it clearly shows two people facing another and watching intently

Common Techniques used in Thriller movies - Sound
Ambient Sounds
We have noticed the importance of ambient sound in Thriller movies, this adds to the setting and atmosphere of the film. Even small sounds such as birds or sirens in the background can add to the mystery of the plot, police sirens tell the audience that it is a crime scene and there are police investigating. In the movie Se7en we saw an example of this when we heard police sirens outside of the apartment, this tells the audience that it is definitely a crime scene.
Musical Score
We have noticed that adding a musical score in certain scenes of Thriller movies can add the effect of intensity or mystery. Low pitch musical scores can emphasise the eerieness of a particular setting and the loneliness of a character. A high pitch musical score can emphasise the danger or action of a particular scene. Here in this clip from Se7en we can hear soft low music that has been added to give us a mysterious effect, music can have a big effect on the audience and this is put to use in this scene.
Dialogue
Dialouge in a Thriller film can be used in different ways to achieve an effect. Dialogue can sometimes be cut out to achieve mystery or it can be amplified to show danger or aggression. Here in this clip from Se7en we can hear Brad Pitt shouting at Kevin Spacey , we can tell from his speech that he is angry and wants Spacey to stop . There is a danger element to this scene and it is obvious to the reader.

Common Techniques used in Thriller movies - Camera
Shot Composition and Framing
We have noticed that in Thriller films the shot composition is very important as it can add mystery to certain characters or objects. Mystery is a key theme of thriller films as it keeps the audience guessing and on the edge of their seats. In the film The Usual Suspects, we had an example of shot composition which does not reveal the murderers face, this adds to the mystery around this character as it would spoil the film if we knew who he was.
Focus
The use of Focus as a camera technique is important and significant in a Thriller as it can add to the mystery of a certain scene. Here we see in the Da Vinci Code the use of lack of focus has hidden the identity of the villain chasing the character, this adds to the intensity of the scene as we dont know who he is and what he is doing.
Close - Up
The camera technique of close ups and using zoom is used commonly in Thriller films. Byshowing a close up of a person, object or place can add to the mystery or creepiness which is a common effect which film makerks try to achieve when filming a Thriller. The audience wonders what the significance of this "thing" is and it can be linked into later on in the film. Here we see in Se7en a close up of a person slicing the tips off their fingertips. This is creepy and the audience wonders why is he doing this. Villains are a big part of Thrillers and you can use close ups to add to the mystery of a baddie.

Common Techniques used in Thriller movies - Editing
Motivated Cut
This is a technique which shows a characters reaction or facial expression to seeing something or someone. We saw this technique used in Silence of The Lambs, the main character walked into the office and saw something that we as an audience can't see. We want to see it so it cuts to what she is looking at. This is a common technique used in Thrillers as it builds the tension. We want to see what it is by seeing her reaction, it also adds to the mystery.
Cross - Cutting
We discovered whilst watching the openings of Thriller films that cross-cutting is a common technique used to establish the different scenes of action taking place at once. Here we see in the Da Vinci Code, the guard is being shot in a dark empty place whereas Robert Langdon is giving a presentation in front of a crowd. This emphasises the mystery and setting of the two scenes by cutting between them.

Common Techniques used in Thriller movies - Mise En Scene
Props and Costume
Costume plays a big part in defining a Thriller film. As we can see here in this screenshot from Se7en , Morgan Freeman is wearing typical investigator/detective clothing. This tells the audience what type of film it is and makes it serious.
Props are very important when defining a Thriller film, the technique of using certain props is commonly found in Thriller films. Here we see a dead body from Se7en which tells the audience that a murder has happened and it is a crime scene. Crime and investigations are a typical plot for Thriller movies.
Lighting and Setting
We have noticed that in Thriller films that Setting is very important as it can add to the mystery of the place. In the Da Vinci Code we saw that the movie is set in the Louvre Museum at night time where no one is around as the place is shut. The lighting is minimal as to add to the creepiness of the person chasing the character.

Filming and Editing : Match Cut Practice
For our Preliminary Task we have to include a Match Cut , this is a practice film that I edited in Final Cut Express.
Typical Conventions in Thrillers
Focus
A camera can be in focus or out of focus, focus can be used to disguise certain things that the audience is not meant to see. Something which is out of focus is usually a key part of the film away which would make the whole mystery obvious to the audience. An Example of this is in Da Vinci Code when the man is getting chased having the camera out of focus to disguise the person chasing him.
Motivated Cut
A motivated cut is a cut in which a character is looking somewhere where the audience wants to look this cut can be used to create suspense as the audience wants to know what the character is looking at. An Example of this is in Da Vinci Code when the girl is looking at the wall with the photos on by having a shot on her face with her looking at it this makes us want to look at the wall and wonder what is on it.
Shot Composition and Framing
The way the shots are composed can make hide certain factors of a film for example if someone is killed then the killers face will not be shown to create mystery. An Example of this is in The Usual Suspects where the Killers face is not shown, this adds to the mystery of who he is and what he has to do with the storyline.
Musical Score
Musical score can be used to set moods for example a Major key usually means that something happy or good is going to happen while a Minor key usually means something sad or bad is going to happen. The Musical Score also can reflect action on screen. An example of this is in Jaws where the music gets louder and faster when the person is getting attacked. Also in the Da Vinci Code there is low slow sustained music when the man is getting chased this shows something bad is going to happen in this case he gets shot it also adds to the suspense and mystery.
Props
Props are essential as they give the audience a visual incite into something such as if someone is in a detective cloak it connotates that the setting is a crime scene or there is a mystery to be solved. An example of this is in Se7en where there is police tape and a dead body this shows the audience that it is a crime scene.
Setting & Lighting
The setting shows alot about the film as does the lighting, Disturbing places are usually Dark while Friendly places are usually light. An Example of this is in the Da Vinci Code where the scene is shot with dark lightning this emphasises the fact that something bad it going to happen and darkness obscures the audiences vision.
Close up
A close up can tell the audience alot about what is being close upped this is because you can see people facial expression so see what their reaction is also it may be used to intentionally show the audience something on an object that was never noticed before. An example of this is in Death Note where there is a close up of the hand writing on the paper and then after there is a scene of someone dying this makes the audience wonder what the comparison is between the hand writing and the deaths.
To make our film successful we need to consider all of these techniques.

Matched Cut
For our Preliminary task we need to film a person walking through a door using a matched cut.
Def: A Matched Cut is a cut in film editing from one scene to another in which the two camera shots' compositional elements match, helping to establish a strong continuity of action.
180 Degree Rule For our filming of the conversation in our Preliminary Task we have to make sure we dont break the 180 Degree Rule of filming. This states that two or more people in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other.

The Birds
Alfred Hitchcocks The Birds is a great example of a Psychological Thriller as it uses something we see everyday to scare us we consider Birds 'normal' and harmless we would enver think of a bird harming a human being. If we could think of an idea of something that we consider 'normal' in everyday life which could be potentially harmful to us this would be a great idea for our film as people will be impacted by it as they probably think nothing of our idea in everyday life.
Research into the Thriller Genre Pt 2
Thriller genres that will be most useful to our group will be:
Mystery Thriller: Suspense films where characters attempt solving, or involved in mystery. Mystery is a good way to get an audience hooked on a film as they want to find out what the mystery involves and entails. In our group we need to have an opening sequence which makes people want to keep watching and make them wonder how the film will progress and how, why, when, who ? the mystery happened.
Psychological Thriller: In which the conflict between the main characters is mental and emotional rather than physical. in our group we would need to create a good 'psychological aspect' which affects the audience aswell as effecting the characters in the film.
Crime Thriller: Hybrid of Crime films and Thriller films. Often focus on the criminals rather than policemen. In our group we would need to think of a crime which is convincing and also has alot of oppotunities of how it could have been done, who done it , how they done it , why they done it, when they done it.

Thriller Elements
The Main elements of a thriller
- Suspense - Suspense is the wait for something to happen, making the audience wonder and wait for something to happen, the audeince has a sense of uncertainty of what is to happen and they can do nothing about it. this can be achieved in a variety of ways such as camera angles, lighting, setting, props, sound, dialogue e.t.c
- Mystery - greatly linked with suspense as the audience wondering and not knowing what is going on which also creates suspense. Without mystery the audience would not want to watch on as they would know what happens. Mystery also digs deeper as it onvolves why things happened or are going to happen depending on previous events or current events the audience wants to figure out or find out the previous events or events yet to come.
- Tension - Tension is greatly linked with suspense as anything could happen audience doesnt know what is going to happen but they know something is going to happen, all the tension is released at the moment when it does. Tension can be increased via music, fast cutting rates, camera angles, dialogue e.t.c.
- Our company needs to find effective ways to achieve these elements for our film to be succesful.

Mystery Thrillers
Films where the main characters are attempting to solve a mystery. They usually involve a lot of suspense and tension. Some examples of mystery thrillers are The Number 23 and Vertigo.
The Number 23
The graph on the right displays who rated the film 'The Number 23' on the IMDb website. It shows that this film is most popular with females under 18, but this can be misleading because only 198 females under 18 voted. So taking this into account, i believe that all people under 18 are the most popular audience for this film. If we therefore decide to do a mystery thriller we will need to use them as a target audience.
Vertigo
The graph on the right show the ratings for the film 'Vertigo'. this is clearly a very popular film and it is most popular (debatebly) with males under 18. However, it is a film that is very popular amongst all viewers but mostly males.
In conclusion, if we were to choose to do a mystery thriller then we would need to target it at males of all ages to have the greatest effect.

Crime Thriller
Crime Thrillers are a mixture of both crime films and thrillers and the main elements of a crime thriller are suspense and mystery. They tend to follow the experiences of a criminal and not a good guy, and they usually focus on crimes such as: serial killers/murders, heists, chases and double-crosses. Examples of popular crime thrillers are Hostage and Ocean's eleven. So if we decide we want to use the theme of crime in our thriller we will need to know who the target audince should be by studying the viewer ratings supplied by IMDb.
Hostage
The ratings on the right are for the film Hostage and although they show that females under 18 liked it more than anybody else it also shows that they are the least amount of people that voted on the poll which implies that not as many watched the film. This is probably because crime thrillers are not very appealing for women and therefore it would be innacurate to target our audience based on these results. Females between 18-29 also enjoyed this film.
Ocean's Eleven
The ratings on the right display the votes of people for the crime thriller 'Ocean's Eleven'. Using these results you can see that males under 18 are the most in favour of this film and are therefore the target audience for this film. However, females aged 18-29 also seemed to enjoy it a lot, and considering that there are more votes by this group than by males under 18 it would seem that they are also very interested in thes types of films.
In conclusion, if we are to use the crime theme for our thriller we will need to take into account the fact that males under 18 and fenmales between 18-29 both enjoy these films a lot. Howver, if we were to make a crime Thriller, i believe that we will target males under 18

Main elements of Thrillers
For us to be able to create our own introduction to a thriller film, we need to be able to define what a thriller actually is. The main elements in a Thriller film are the following:
suspense,
tension,
and excitement.
Suspense and tension are all about the atmosphere of the filmsand can be controlled by camera angles, sound and setting. These are both going to be crucial elements for our introduction to our Thiller film.
Excitement is also controled using camera and sound and it is an element that must also be included.

Filming
While filming the preliminary we have noticed that distractions and obstacles such as other people, seasonal weather and unexpected noises can hinder filming. These aspects of natural occurrence can cause problems while filming and may slow it down, we need to minimize these aspects to be able to create a the best possible film we can.

Common Techniques Used in Thriller Movies
In our Analysis part of our Media Studies we have been studying Title Sequences for Thriller films. We have watched several and were asked "What makes it a Thriller?". We analysed the openings and noted down the common techniques used which makes it a Thriller movie. I have done 4 separate posts into the different techniques in Camera, Editing, Sound and Mis En Scene.

Production for our Preliminary Task
For our Preliminary Task we need to ensure that we make use of a variety of , Shot Types, Camera Angles and movement. We are using this task to prove that we are capable of filming our Thriller Title Sequence. We have decided the genre for our Task is also Thriller which allows us to prepare for our main task later in the year.
Match Cut
For our Preliminary Task we have to include a Match Cut where a character walks through the door and cuts to the other side of the door through film editing. This creates a strong flow of action and continuity. This shows the examiner that we know how to film our piece and also edit smoothly in post-production.
This is an example of a Match Cut from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Shot Types
Close - up
Zoom

Valkyrie
Valkyrie is a a thriller film that contains a lot of mystery throughout. If we are going to make a Thriller film that has a lot of mystery in it we will need to see which audience to aim it at for the best possible results. We used IMDb's ratings to help us.
Looking at the ratings given by IMDb you can see that Males under 18 prefere this film more than any other group. So, if we decide to make a Thriller film with a lot of mystery involved we would need to target this audience

As typical of a Thriller Film a male audience is greater attracted, with 386,309 of the votes being cast by men shows that alot more men have rated this film this which is fairly predictable, men have rated it at 8.9 on average which is pretty high which seems to suggets they enjoyed it. A 58,946 females and rated this film and have rated it at 8.8 which means they must of enjoyed the film to a high degree 0.1% less then men even though less ratings have been cast by women this shows that women have still seen The Dark Knight and have enjoyed it even though it is not predominantly aimed at women. Alot more votes were casted by the age bracket 18-29 this shows that alot more 18-29 year olds have rated this film which means that more 18-29 year olds are likely to have sen this film than that of the under 18's,30-44 & 45+ brackets this is most likely to be the case due to the fact that previous Batman films were brough out around 10 years ago which is when the 18-29 year olds would of seen and grown up with Batman films,tv programs and comics.
The Dark Knight was rated Highest by males under 18 even though they were a small percentage of the ratings this data shows that they enjoyed Batman just as much as the 18-29 year olds who grew up with it which means that Batman still has interest from the younger audience.

We needed to discover the target audience that we will use for our Thriller film. To do this we will each look at five seperate films and their viewers ratings and see what type of person like which film more. This will help us discover who to aim our own Thriller film at. To do this we used the IMDb website.
Salt
The first film that i found the viewers ratings for was Salt. This is a unique Thriller because it has a women as the main the majority of Thriller films use males for the main character.
Looking at the viewer ratings it is clear that females under 18 prefer this film more than any other group of people. However, this film's ratings are not very high and possibly using a female actress as the main character in a thriller film is not what the audience want.

The Departed
The Departed
Again by looking at this chart we can see The Departed was watched and rated more by a male audience aged 18-29. However the overall ratings of Male and Female are exactly the same. This links highly to Inception which also cast Leonardo Di Caprio as the main character. This shows to us that a main character can be extremely important in a Thriller movie as you need to hit both gender audiences.
Overall by looking at these audience rating charts from IMDB, we know as a production company that our main target audience will have to be Males aged 18-29. We also could touch on the Female audience but we know most of our viewers will be male. To achieve this we need to think about our films plot, characters, costume and musical score etc.

Silence of The Lambs
Silence of The Lambs
By looking at the chart for Silence of The Lambs we can see that it is dominated again by a male audience , especially aged 18-29. The movie follows the trend and we can see that the movie hit the male audience rather than the female audience. This movie also has a strong 30-44 aged audience as well but this could be down to the scary/ violent nature of the film.
